Why Is My Computer Processing Stuff With Provokation?

My computer keeps making processing sounds from time to time. I have Windows Vista. My XP didn’t do that unless I was running a program or whatever. I keep looking at the task manager to see what it is but nothing seems amiss. No updates, either…
I don’t know why, but it’s bugging me. Does your computer just process things on a schedule or what?

Most likely the paging file. When your system is idle, Windows likes to write the contents of memory to the hard drive in case you think of something different to ask of the computer.
And a new Vista system spends a whole lot of time creating an index.
