Looking for some help, my partner is going for a sales role as an account manager within the industry he has worked for 10 years. He hasn’t been in a sales role before however has all the other experience to make him great for this position.
What in your eyes makes a good sales person and how would you look to achieve your targets? If successful he will have an exisiting customer base to look after and this is where his opportunities will come from.
Any advice and help would be appreciated.

When he goes into the interview he must be prepared to sell himself as an employee. Go on line and look up qualifications or characteristics that people are looking for in the company. Practice role playing with him (you being the employer) He needs to present himself as a professional who knows every detail of what he is selling so that if a customer has a question about the product he will not be caught off guard, and look like a scammer.

In my eyes:
- Honesty
- Integrity
- Social
- Outgoing
- Independant
- Product knowledge
- Know your competitor
- Thick skinned
- Consistancy (Being able to not miss a beat and spit out the same pitch each and every time. No matter where or when.)
These are all traits most sales people have. An account manager role is exactly what it is, just a role. It’s no different then him doing what he was doing before. However, now he needs to understand that he is only going to be as good as his last month. Management in sales doesn’t care if you worked for the company for 10 years, and that your bright and “sweet”. Sales people are needed to help satisfy the needs of the stockholders, and to drive earnings.
No matter how many times people tell him no, or that he gets doors slammed in his face. He needs to dust himself off and get back on the horse. It could be somewhat trying on your relationship to, cause remember. On a bad day, he had to listen to people tell him what a “turd”, he was and that he is worthless. Just make sure you listen, be patient and take it easy on him.
He should do fine.
